How to Practice Integration
Step 1: Choose a pattern, scale, arpeggio or lick sequence to go master, it doesn’t need to be complicated you just need to perfect its performance.
Step 2: Repeat your chosen pattern in your instrument enough times to get it memorized. This will make you more intuitive and develop your musical ear.
Step 3: Create and perform 4 variations from the original pattern, In case you struggle with ideas, here are some tips-
- Use pull-ups.
- Change the order of notes and see what rings your ears.
- Don't be afraid to use unexpected stops, Vibrato, slides, and hammer-ons may also help you spice up your variations.
- Switch from lower to higher octaves.
Step 4: Change the speed of your licks or patterns, this technique is known as Rubato, and it translates to intentionally playing out of tempo.
Step 5: Change the first 4 notes of your chosen pattern, and keep the rest the same, then proceed to change the middle ones and then the last 4. This will help you explore new possibilities and layers on your fretboard.
Tips to Make Your Practice Easier
First off, make a shortlist of the creative aspects you believe are lacking within your repertoire, this may lead you to find new ways to approach, for example, rubato and tempo. Try to become more fluent throughout this whole exercise circuit, moving from one step to another with no stops in between. To do this, it is important to choose a sequence that is already mastered. In case you choose to perform an arpeggio sequence, try and employ brief silences throughout bits of the whole phrasings. Also, remember to create harmonic sequences parting from the original one. In case you’re a novice, try and part from the minor and major scales.
